To remove larger particles such as dust, pollen, and hair from the air before it passes through the main filters.

To extend the life of the more expensive and delicate filters downstream by capturing larger particles that could otherwise clog or damage them.

They are usually made of a coarse material such as fiberglass or synthetic fibers and are easy to replace or clean regularly.
